Key Stage 4 Choices

Choosing subjects to study in Years 10 and 11 is an exciting milestone for students and an important moment for parents too. It marks the start of the journey into Key Stage 4, when students begin to focus on the subjects they will study in greater depth over the next two years.

At Unity College, all students continue to study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Combined Science. Alongside these, students choose four additional subjects which help to shape their individual pathway through Years 10 and 11.

We encourage students to choose a broad and balanced range of subjects. We strongly recommend including a Modern Foreign Language and at least one humanities subject, such as Geography or History. These subjects are highly valued because they help to keep future opportunities open for sixth form, college, university and employment. They also develop important skills such as communication, analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking.

Choosing the right subjects is about finding the best balance between interests, strengths and future aspirations. Students are more likely to succeed when they choose subjects that they enjoy, are willing to work hard in, and can feel proud of achieving in.

We know that this can feel like a big decision, which is why we work closely with students and parents to provide clear guidance and support throughout the process. Full details about the options process and each subject are included in the Choices Booklet below.

Our aim is for every student to make informed, confident choices and begin Year 10 with a curriculum that is both ambitious and right for them.

Together we succeed
