As you would expect, English is a core subject for all students at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.  In year 7, English is embedded within our new i-XL thematic curriculum.  Unity College specialises in English and the Arts, and as such, puts English at the heart of its curriculum.

All students at KS4 will be expected to gain at least one GCSE in English or an equivalent qualification.

In addition to English at GCSE some students will be able to take GCSE Literature and/or Media Studies.

Students who successfully pass early entry GCSE English at a grade B or above will be able to take AS Level English.

Studying English to GCSE level:

The English course requires students to study a range of texts from the Literacy Heritage covering a wide variety of works from pre and post 1914. In addition works from different Cultures and Traditions will be explored and analysed. Students are assessed on their knowledge of the set texts, their ability to justify their opinions and on writing skills. The final GCSE is made up of coursework (40%) and an external examination (60%).

The English Literature course requires students to study novels, plays and poetry from the Literacy Heritage covering pre and post 1914 works and texts from different Cultures and Traditions. Students are assessed on their knowledge of the set texts and their ability to analyse and evaluate what they have read. The final GCSE grade is made up from coursework (30%) and an external examination (70%).

Studying English at AS Level:

This year the English Department is introducing AS Level English / Literature for those students who successfully achieve a B grade or above in the early entry GCSE examinations. This qualification makes up the first year of the two year ‘A’ level course in the subject and can be continued in Further Education if desired.
Students who take this course will have to work independently and be able to meet tight deadlines. Students will need to explore social, historical and philosophical contexts of the literary works covered and be well organised. Commitment to achieve in the subject at an ‘A’ level standard is essential.
